Number of international visitors reached 9.4 million in 2019

The total number of international non-resident passengers coming to Georgia in 2019 grew by 7.8% as opposed to the previous year and amounted to 9.4 million, states the data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Those international visitors, who are over the age of 15 and travel for less than one year, reached 7.7 million, which is 7.3% higher compared to 2018. 46.4% of those travelers were from the 31-50 age group.

In 2019, 5.1 million visits out of those international visitors, were tourist-type which includes an overnight stay in Georgia. This is a 6.8% rise compared to 2018. 66% of total visitors were tourists, while 27.5% visited Georgia for a day and didn't spend a night here.

In 2019 the most significant number of visitors, around 1.2 million, came from the Russian Federation, which equated to 20.1% of the total number of visitors. However, the most significant share of visits, 1.5 million, came on Azerbaijan, which is 7.2% higher compared to 2018.

Top 3 reasons for visiting Georgia were Holiday, Leisure, Recreation (43.5%); Visiting friends/relatives (19%), and Transit to other countries(16.1%)

The majority of visits were to Tbilisi (4.1 million) and the mountainous region of Adjara (2.3 million).

In terms of the income from all those visits, the travelers spent 8.5 billion GEL in Georgia in 2019, which is a 7.5% increase compared to 2018, noted GeoStat.
